
Dr. Dexter Moore Jr. joined the Providence Public School District (PPSD) in August 2025 and currently serves as Chief Operating Officer, where he leads system-wide operations including transportation, facilities and capital planning, information technology, safety, and student enrollment. He is spearheading an ambitious $1 billion capital modernization effort, aligning facilities investments with instructional priorities to ensure school environments effectively support high-quality teaching and improved student outcomes.Most recently, Dr. Moore served as Chief of Staff for the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), where he helped drive measurable gains in graduation, college readiness, and reductions in chronic absenteeism. He brings deep experience building and stewarding cross-sector partnerships that expand opportunities for students, educators, and families. He also played a pivotal leadership role in the district’s exit from 23 years of state receivership – working closely with the Board of Education and local governance stakeholders to enable a successful return to local control.Dexter began his career as a classroom teacher and has since held leadership roles at the school and system level, bringing a practitioner’s perspective to complex system challenges. He is known for translating strategy into execution – strengthening core operations to better support schools and deliver improved outcomes for students.He is deeply committed to public education as the system responsible for serving all students and families. He believes that aligning efforts within and beyond school districts around a clear vision, strategic resources, and disciplined execution is essential to creating the conditions for students to realize their full potential.Dr. Moore holds a doctorate in education leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and masters in education policy and leadership from the University of Michigan. In addition to his district leadership, Dr. Moore has taught university courses and developed case studies for education leaders, and will begin teaching in the Urban Education Policy program at Brown University this summer.
