Carolynn King Richmond has served as the President & CEO of MicroSociety since 2004. With degrees in medicine from George Washington University, law from Villanova University, and a genuine passion reflected in a Master’s in Education from Harvard—where she took courses at the Law School, Business School, and Kennedy School of Public Policy—she embodies a commitment to diverse perspectives. Never confined by convention, Carolynn’s intellectual curiosity and strong work ethic have proven invaluable since joining MicroSociety, where she transformed a small group of like-minded teachers into a grassroots network of hundreds of schools across 40 states and five countries, impacting over 450,000 students. What began as a classroom experience evolved into a complex system of school-wide industries, government, and HEART, a mini-metropolis that enables children to grow organically over time. Students design and manufacture products, create services, and sell them in the marketplace, write and enforce their laws, and tackle the moral and ethical challenges that arise along the way. Instead of using real-world texts to teach core content, Micro teachers position reading, writing, and math as tools for honing on-the-job success, significantly enhancing students' motivation to learn and succeed. This interdisciplinary, innovative learning laboratory and its companion digital platform empower students to develop into leaders, entrepreneurs, creative thinkers, and confident citizens.
