Dr. Althea M. Hammond is a native of Chicago and is a proud product of Chicago Public Schools. Dr. Hammond has worked for Chicago Public Schools for the last 28-years. Her roles have included: Intermediate and middle school Math and Science teacher, Science Coach, School Counselor and Case Manager, and School Business Manager. Currently, she: is the Instructional Leader and Principal at Plamondon STEM Elementary School, leads a Professional Learning Community Leader through the Chicago Public Education Fund, serves as a Lead Eligibility Assessor for the Department of Principal Quality, and is an Adjunct faculty member at DePaul University in the Office of Innovative Professional Learning - providing professional development and consulting on the development and action of equity and social justice based educational practices in schools/organizations. Dr. Hammond believes that public education can be a “game changer” for children – especially children of marginalized populations. She believes that public education can be the vehicle - the access to learning that will propel children's lives forward to heights unknown. She says, “My job is to ensure that the teachers I lead and the children who are served by my school (and every school) get the best. Every educator I interact with must know who I am and what I stand for...for children...for humanity. Ambiguity is not an option. I have to be clear about my stance, live my stance, and continuously build my capacity, and the capacity of others so that 100% can be given daily. Inequity for one is injustice for all!"
