Joshua Steckel is the Senior Director of College and Career Advising for New York City Public Schools (NYCPS). He began his career at NYCPS as a school counselor, and built college and career planning programs from the ground up at two schools in Brooklyn serving students grades 6-12. As those programs grew and thrived, Josh began coaching principals, school support networks and youth development organizations, and led advocacy efforts as a writer and speaker to drive deeper investment in the staffing, resources, and policy changes needed to ensure that high-quality future planning supports became a foundational element of what it meant to be a student in NYC’s public schools. In his current position, Josh has authored policy on college and career advising for NYCPS and led design and implementation of high-profile programming inside signature education initiatives for both the Adams and de Blasio administrations. Most recently, he has led development of the Career Navigation Roadmap, a blueprint and standard sequence for the set of planning experiences that should be part of every students’ school journey at NYCPS; and he has spearheaded NYCPS’s Pathways Advising Coalition, an effort to define a common measures of success for high quality college and career planning supports across a group of non-profit and community-based organizations, school support networks, city agencies, institutions of higher education, industry partners, and district leaders.
