Dr. Margaret Honey is President & CEO of the Scratch Foundation, where she brings decades of nonprofit leadership and a lifelong commitment to expanding creative learning opportunities for young people. Widely recognized for her work at the intersection of technology and learning, she has helped shape some of the nation’s most innovative learning initiatives. Prior to joining Scratch in 2024, Dr. Honey served as President & CEO of the New York Hall of Science for 15 years. Under her leadership, NYSCI became a national leader in hands-on STEM education, pioneering the museum’s signature “Design-Make-Play” approach. She oversaw the creation of the award-winning Design Lab, helped launch Connected Worlds—one of the world’s first large-scale immersive learning exhibits—and deepened partnerships with families and educators in Queens. Her vision led to the opening of a STEAM-focused preschool serving more than 300 young children annually on the NYSCI campus. Earlier in her career, Dr. Honey was Vice President at the Education Development Center (EDC) and Director of EDC’s Center for Children and Technology. There, she led major initiatives funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Institute for Education Sciences, among others. From her early work on the groundbreaking PBS series The Voyage of the Mimi to her decade-long collaboration with the Union City (NJ) public schools, she has remained at the forefront of educational innovation. Dr. Honey holds a doctorate in developmental psychology from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree from Hampshire College. She has advised Congress, state legislatures, and federal panels, and served as chair of several National Academy of Sciences consensus studies. Dr. Honey is a member of the National Academy of Education and serves on the boards of Bank Street College of Education, Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Post University, and Sphero.
