Strengthening Our Schools, Communities and Profession Through Innovative Hiring The percentage of educators of color diminishes at every stage along the professional pathway. The time is now to develop effective strategies to attract and retain high quality educators of color in our public schools. In this pitch we describe how Highline's human resources team shifted its focus from management of transactions to a focus on workforce planning and development: including the development of a teacher profile, alignment of the profile to recruiting efforts, investment in educator pipelines at the local level, and the development of a bi-lingual fellows program that draws upon the linguistic skills of support staff, with many then becoming teachers in our district. Finally, we will share our ongoing challenges and lessons learned, along with promising results.
