Coming off of a record ASU+GSV Summit with over 7,000 participants from 70 countries, we're excited to name Joe Karlgaard as the CEO of the GSV Summit. Joe is the first Chief Executive Officer in its fifteen-year history and will be complimenting the leadership of co-founders Deborah Quazzo and Michael Moe.
Joe joins the GSV Summit Team after a decade as the Director of Athletics at Rice University. Under Joe's leadership, Rice's Division 1 sports teams excelled in athletics while continuing its tradition of academic excellence. Joe's initial "Vision for Victory" plan and subsequent "New Vision for Rice Athletics" were the blueprints for the Owls achieving success both on and off the field, as well as impressive business operation achievements in branding, marketing, and fund raising. Joe's results at Rice earned him national recognition, including being named "40 under 40" by the Sports Business Journal, which honors the best and brightest young executives shaping the future of the industry.
"We feel privileged to have Joe join the GSV Summit Team as its first CEO at a critical time for the Summit and Society," said Deborah Quazzo, GSV Ventures Managing Partner and co-founder of the Summit. "The Summit's North Star of giving everybody an equal opportunity to participate in the future through accelerating innovation in education has never been more important. Joe's experience as a proven leader in delivering high quality and high impact results will build on the foundation we've created."
A native of North Dakota, Joe's Dad was a legendary educator and athletic director in Bismarck. Joe was a student-athlete at Stanford University and, following that, received his Masters and PhD in Educational Policy and Administration from the University of Minnesota.
Prior to Rice, Joe was the Senior Associate Athletic Director at Stanford. Joe, his wife Jill, and their three sons Charlie (15), twins Lucas and Daniel (7) and dog Fleener currently make their home in Houston.
The ASU+GSV Summit is a gathering of global leaders across "Pre-K to Gray" learning and workforce skills. Forbes called the Summit "the Davos of Education," and the New York Times called it "the must-attend event for EdTech investors." The 15th Annual ASU+GSV Summit will be held April 14th-17th, 2023, in San Diego, California.
