From Surveillance to Signal: What Student Writing Behavior Reveals About Learning

The writing process is where learning happens or doesn't. Most academic integrity tools can't see it.

This session examines what student writing behavior reveals about how students actually engage with academic work. Starting from the question educators already know (did AI write this?), it reframes the conversation around a more useful one: what was the student actually doing, and what does that tell us about learning?

Attendees will come away with a new lens for the AI conversation in their institution and a concrete sense of what process transparency makes possible. The session closes with a live demo of Grammarly Authorship and a preview of where AI-assisted writing tools in higher education are headed next.
