Unleashing A Rural STEM Renaissance

While guest-teaching in 6th grade classrooms across the country as an undercover "substitute", the speaker spotted a untapped gold mine of extraordinary potential all across rural America.

He previously served for a decade as the National Coach of the USA International Math Olympiad team, and has been a math professor at Carnegie Mellon University for 16 years. Through his roles, he teaches/speaks in 100+ cities each year, interacting directly with kids in hundreds of classrooms, with the specific goal of building future pioneers at the forefront of science and technology. He observed that particularly in rural classrooms, he regularly finds relatively high percentages of kids who enthusiastically rise to the challenge of inventing their own solutions to challenging, non-routine math problems. Their response level is so strong that they should be on track to become high performers. However, they often hit a ceiling, because small schools are less likely to have advanced coaching available to push their limits.

This workshop will explore learnings from the speaker's work to diagnose this issue, and innovate and deploy a nationally-scalable solution, which attendees' schools are welcome to join. He is now on a mission to help these students soar. It's personal. He grew up in Wisconsin.
