Dan Quine

Dan holds a PhD in Machine Learning from the University of Leeds. In 1996, he moved to California to work at Apple, where he led development of Hypercard and Quicktime applications. He led engineering teams at a number of early AI startups in San Francisco during the dotcom boom and bust. In 2006 he joined Google in New York, where he led the team that built their first semantic search engine. In 2011, he moved to London where he was CTO of live music startup Songkick. Returning to California in 2015, he led product and engineering at AltSchool, the progressive educational startup. He has since led product and engineering teams at Mode and Lever. In 2025, he joined the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s education team, now Learning Commons. He leads their engineering team as they build foundational tools that make AI systems better for use in education. In his spare time, Dan is a father, a keen potter and an industrial historian - he has published three books and dozens of scholarly articles on railway and mining history in the US and the UK.
