Joanna Bruno, Ph.D., serves as the Chief Academic Officer at the Colorado Department of Education, where she has worked tirelessly for eighteen years to advance educational equity for all students. A champion for freedom through education, she has led transformative efforts to empower teachers as leaders and ensure that every child, regardless of background, has access to a meaningful and inclusive education. In her current role, Joanna oversees pivotal programs including Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education, Elementary Literacy and School Readiness, Learning Supports, Standards and Instructional Support, Gifted Education, Facility Schools, and Special Education. Her work reflects her commitment to meeting the immediate needs of students and educators while also anticipating and adapting to the rapidly evolving future of education. A forward thinker, Joanna believes that educational systems must evolve in response to societal shifts. Her philosophy emphasizes the importance of building nimble systems that are responsive and effective. She views technology as the ultimate equalizer, capable of bridging gaps and transforming learning for students everywhere. Joanna's dedication to improving education is rooted in both practice and research. While working at the Department of Education, she earned a doctorate from Denver University, specializing in multilingual learners and assessment. Her expertise has informed innovative approaches to support diverse student populations and maximize their potential. Prior to her tenure at the department, Joanna held various positions in Colorado schools and contributed to advancements in medical research.
