John leads education sector investing for TPG’s Rise Fund where he developed the fund’s global strategy focused on personalized learning, special education, behavioural health and workforce education. Since the Rise Fund’s launch in 2017, John has led investments in DreamBox Learning, InStride, Presence Learning, Teachers of Tomorrow the Burrell and Idaho Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and Outcomes First Group. John also assisted with investments in Renaissance Learning, EverFi, International Medical University and Asia Pacific University. John has been investing in the education and healthcare sectors for over two decades leading over 30 acquisitions and building 16 platform companies through multiple economic cycles. Previously, John was a founding partner of the Bridges Ventures’ U.S. Sustainable Growth Fund, a Partner and Group Head leading healthcare and education investing with Gryphon Investors and a Vice President with DB Capital Partners. John began his career leading a nationally recognized environmental health program for Alameda County. John holds a BA from Yale University, an MBA from Stanford University and a Doctorate of Education from the University of Pennsylvania where his research focused on quantifying the impact of internship participation on the wages of community college graduates. John lives in Piedmont, California, with his wife, Chi, and daughter, Jackie Mai.
