Michael is a Program Officer on the Transformation, Public Goods, Solutions, and Innovative Models team within the larger Postsecondary Success team. In this role, Michael collaborates with partners to reimagine and advance higher education, working to break down the barriers of race and income as predictors of student success. His goal is clear: to increase the number of students earning degrees, while ensuring equity and opportunity are at the forefront. Michael’s portfolio centers on empowering institutions to leverage scale, digital tools, and targeted strategies that make quality degrees accessible and attainable nationwide. Before joining the Gates Foundation, Michael served as the Assistant Dean of Retention and Persistence Programs at the University of San Francisco (USF). In this role, he led efforts to build supportive, inclusive environments that uplift marginalized students and help them thrive. His commitment to equity also extended to his roles as Program Manager for the Black Achievement, Success, and Engagement initiative and founding Director of USF’s Black Resource Center. Michael established alliances, programs, and resources that continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Black students. Michael holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of San Francisco and is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Organizational Leadership there as well.
