Dr. Tommy Chang is the CEO of New Teacher Center, a national organization working to disrupt educational inequities for underserved students by accelerating educator effectiveness. With 25+ years in education, he has led schools, districts, and non-profits. Previously, Dr. Chang was Superintendent of Boston Public Schools and an instructional superintendent at Los Angeles Unified School District. A former biology teacher and high school principal, he also served as Senior Advisor for Strategy and Programs at Great Public Schools Now, a Los Angeles-based non-profit investing in public education excellence. Born in Taiwan, Dr. Chang immigrated to the U.S. at six and grew up in Los Angeles. He holds an Ed.D. from Loyola Marymount University, M.Ed.’s from UCLA’s Principals Leadership Institute and Teachers Education Program, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. A champion for educational equity, Dr. Chang advocates for safe, inclusive learning environments, especially for immigrants, LGBTQ youth, and court-involved students. He serves on boards including Families in Schools, Silicon Schools Fund, and Leading Educators, all dedicated to improving education through community engagement, innovation, and leadership development.
