Closing Knowledge Gaps in Math with AI-Powered Personalized Learning: UCSD & Vocareum

Math literacy is essential for student success, yet national data shows declining proficiency, making it harder for students to advance in STEM fields. UC San Diego and Vocareum have partnered to tackle this challenge using Generative AI-driven personalized learning, ensuring students master the foundational concepts they need for success.

By leveraging Generative AI alongside SME expertise, we have developed an adaptive domain model that maps mathematical concepts and their prerequisites, linking directly to course materials, textbooks, and assessments. AI-powered formative assessments rapidly diagnose student knowledge gaps, creating a digital twin of each student to personalize instruction efficiently. This AI-driven system:

- Attempts to Close the Bloom 2 Sigma gap cost-effectively, delivering personalized tutoring at scale.

- Provides targeted, real-time support, ensuring students receive answers at the right level.

- Seamlessly integrates with existing university platforms, including LMS, ERP and Jupyter Notebooks, for online and in-person learning.

- Tested in multiple math and programming courses, this approach offers a scalable, data-secure solution for CIOs, CTOs, and provosts seeking to improve student outcomes without increasing faculty workload.

The emcee for this session is Kate Sutherland, Managing Director, Tyton Partners.
